Pretty sure it evolved from "oomkin". When Moonkin form was first added with one of the original Druid talent updates (Patch 1.8), most of the raiding balance druids of the day were constantly out of mana due to how the spec worked.

Balance got a pretty hefty buff a short time after and I think the "BOOM" has stuck from that buff and become a general community-coined term for everyone's favorite lazerchicken.
