I like to make a level 1 of whatever I'm going to swap to and just make extra-super-sure that I like what I'm picking (face/hair options, that I like the animations, etc.). Although, to be honest, even doing that there are a few characters I think I've race changed like 4 or 5 times over the years. Such is the curse of being aesthetically-minded.
