I think it’s mostly because they would stop responding to your commands every time they would notice a critter close by.
One must realize that it’s very hard to tame spiders, especially when they’re bigger than you.

Also, we don’t want to see players skipping trash mobs by taking shortcuts through the ceiling or by going all Tarzan with those webs.

Seriously, I’d like one too.

I'm not so sure… I've never seen anyone showing off their pet tarantula‘s doing new tricks. Most I've seen is "Look! It's in my hand and I'm still breathing!"
