Seriously Blizzard!?!?!
I know you'll just delete this post as part of you draconian march to quell the voices of those who pay your monthly subscription fee to play your game.
But, I still have the right to say my peace and to post what I and I'm sure hundreds, if not thousands of other players feel is an outrage.
WE pay a monthly subscription to play WOW, we don't pay to sit around and do nothing while the realms are shut down or restarted multiple times in the same week!
I understand that you might have problems to sort out, but you punish us by shutting down the servers for hours on end in order to resolve your problems. Why are these issues not taken care of during the overnight hours when there are very few of us online and not during the day when there is a much broader base of players who have to be inconvenienced by your lack of regard for our playing time.
In essence Blizzard is short changing the players it relies on for it's very existence! You are stealing our money and then not giving us the time we paid for, all on the premise that you have to resolve "technical issues". So in the end, it seems that the players are the ones who are being punished for your technical departments inability to provide us with a working product. I can't help but think that this is a classic example of the old "Bait and Switch". You bait us with a tremendous game and tell us that we have to pay a monthly premium in order to play for the month, but when we do pay said monthly premium...we get less than the expected month of playtime due to these "technical issues" that will have the realms down for hours at a time.
The issue of the occasional "technical issue" is forgivable, but when the company that is more than willing to take our money in order to play this game embarks on a Draconian campaign to silence the voices of those whose very existence it depends on, then that is where we have to draw the line. YOU Blizzard should go out of your way to welcome the input and hear the voices of those who you serve. You should answer our questions, provide us with updates, make an effort to be a more proactive company toward the customers whose money you so desperately depend upon! Yet, I know that you will instead will choose to quietly delete this thread and once again silence the voices of those whose monthly subscription you need in order to stay in business. I hope one day you will open your eyes and your ears to the voices of the players and their complaints/rants/suggestions, lest Blizzard and World of Warcraft become just another company/MMO that has faded into oblivion, another technological bookend whose mistakes sealed it's fate and caused it to go the way of many others who have faded into black.
Let us hope that you, Blizzard will make that realization before it is too late and those players you say are so valuable finally realize your folly and decide to elsewhere.
The ball is in your court Blizzard...
Let me respond so that hopefully, others that may feel as you do at least get some response. First off, moderation isn't generally a topic we discuss here. Just know that moderation that is done is in accordance to the Code of Conduct and Forum Guidelines. We don't generally explain why a post is removed or suspensions are given save (on occasion) to those that were affected. You may call it draconian if you like, but just keep in mind, utilizing that word in your opening wasn't the most approachable option for having a conversation. That said, this thread isn't (and shouldn't be) about moderation. It's about maintenance, so I'll try to address that a little bit for you.
Maintenance is essential for us to make sure we're providing the best possible experience you can get while playing the game. Believe it or not, this last patch was a hefty creature. It's possibly one of our (maybe even the) largest patches ever. There are a lot of working parts to World of Warcraft and for every patch that is added on, the complexity of it just grows so does the chance of an error creeping in. So, we try to do what we can to minimize the down time while making sure we're doing everything we can to ensure a smooth play experience for you as well. We generally try to minimize the impact on as many people as possible, but sometimes, when something needs fixed, it needs fixed right now. We try to provide ample warning and updates on the process as well should it run a bit long. Even if it's just, "we're working on it still." As a gamer myself, I understand the frustration that comes from wanting to play when you want to play. You get your mind set around what you want to do when you go in, and find that you can't log in just yet. The company here is likewise full of gamers, and I assure you, everyone on this end is doing everything within their power to provide a great experience from start to finish. |

We currently have Free Character Moves for Stormrage. We're also keeping an eye out for any additional reports of high queue realms. why do you have to thank him? and dont look up him like a wow god.. his post didnt help anything.. Not to quibble about x and y chromosomes, but I'm a she and have been all my life. It's always nice to get a "thank you" and what you may think isn't helpful to you may be helpful to someone else. I try to hedge my bets toward more helpful than not but I can't control how valuable my efforts may be perceived. I can only do my best. |

Thanks. We really do try. Sometimes we manage to even succeed a bit. ;) |

That myth has existed since the time home gaming systems first emerged and I found myself with a controller in hand. I consider it an urban legend that will just go on and on forever. ;p |

Awesome! Now stay out of my closet. ;P |

Just so you know... you're going down on my "list". ;) Can you comment on any efforts to minimize the downtime frequency on the future? I think the downtime is huge atm. Sure, although I won't be able to offer much detail. As you've seen we've had to perform some rolling restarts and updates since the release of the patch. Obviously, this isn't ideal, but it's been necessary. So, what we do after these sorts of issues is take a look and see what in our processes may need to be changed or what root issue has been causing problems so that we can avoid having it occur again in the future or anticipate a need to do something differently. We're always working on ways to improve the way things work whether you see it or not. (We refer to it as iterating.) That sometimes results in the unexpected. We try to react to it as quickly as possible then often will do a post mortem to see if we can learn from it and prevent it from happening again. Saturday restarts aren't something we intend to make a regular occurrence as far as I'm aware, but as always, if we feel that it's necessary to provide necessary updates or correct an unexpected issue, we'll do it. |

There's no current plan to increase capacity. We generally try to see if people are willing to move first. We understand that it's not something everyone wants to do though, but at the same time, we've generally had some success with Free Character Moves helping with realm queues. We'll continue keeping an eye on things on our end though. |
|
This is another one that I'm not going to be able to answer completely for you. This does tie into what I mentioned about queues though in that if we're made aware of it, we can look into it. For lag issues, it's generally a good idea to report it to the bug forum. We can't always tell whether it's something on our end or on the user end so will need additional information for our guys and gals to look into. I can't answer much on large scale PvP. It's just definitely something that crops up from time to time, but again, it's not something I'm aware of that has an easy or quick solution. Again, I think identifying where it's occurring and how it's occurring could make all the difference based on player reports. As for those questioning the timing of maintenance, we base it on a variety of factors beyond whether there are people in the office or not. We're predominantly looking at trends in play times and where we will have the least impact on players overall. It's not something that we can 100% succeed in minimizing for everyone. Thus, we try to go for consistency in our timing as much as possible so that everyone at least has an expectation of when realms will be unavailable. |
