It seems people cannot get past the paragraph where I used the unholy word "suggestion" so I removed it. Interpret the thread as you will. I have been driven away from this forum by a select few individuals.
I've been playing WoW since shortly before TBC. I remember the long grinds to level, the group quests that you couldn't even consider soloing at the appropriate level, all that fun stuff.
I remember when BoAs were first introduced and how it made leveling up even quicker and the drag of low levels without gear became a thing of the past.
For the past few days I've been playing a Free To Play account and experiencing a gameplay experience like no other. The only help I can accept from anyone, willing or not, is killing mobs whether in group or not. I cannot whisper anyone outside of this small group of friends, I cannot use the AH, mailbox, any of the public channels, and I cannot invite anyone to a group for help with the more difficult quests. When I started leveling these low levels I was okay with these restrictions, it was different and fun. Considering new players to WoW will have almost the same experience with or without Free To Play account, I feel I speak on behalf of some (or most, idk).
Low level areas almost require BoAs.
I have leveled a paladin to 20 and am currently working on a warlock. I've died in situations that BoA'd players would just fly through due to their enhanced stats, specifically survivability.
In the Fargo Deep Mine of Elwynn Forest it is not uncommon to pull two kobolds at a time. As a level 5 or 6 paladin, if I pulled two kobolds I would die. There was no getting out of it. I'd kill one kobold and die to the second. Paladins don't learn a heal spell until level 7, so it's very difficult to survive in tough (yet common) situations. If I could have killed the kobolds quicker, I would have survived, but I'm working purely on what I get from quests and random drops. A level 5 or 6 doesn't have the silver to purchase vendor weapons.
During the quest Manhunt you have to go kill The Collector and retrieve his ring. The collector is inside a building with two other named NPCs. If you aggro one, you aggro all three. As a warlock I died twice to these NPCs, I ended having to kill the collector as soon as I could, loot him, then die. I did complete this quest at level 9 and I was able to learn and use Healthstone, I just didn't make back to Goldshire for training. I don't even think a healthstone would have helped since I did use a healing potion and still ended up dying with the two named NPCs still alive. If I were in BoAs, I'm certain I would have wrecked all three and moved on without a care in the world.
Finally, murlocs. Everyone knows about these hellions at Crystal Lake and Stone Cairne Lake. They have an extremely short respawn timer, the pats move very quickly, and two or three often are grouped up. Doesn't help that half of them heal themselves at low hp. Without the proper damage output you can't clear through these packs quickly, usually ending up in a death or two. Later on in the levels people will look back on these situations and crack a joke or two, which is probably why murlocs got some infamous in the first place.
There are some classes that don't seem to have these issues. My roommate leveled a shaman on a Free To Play and he never had a problem with dying. I'm thinking it's because he's ranged (as opposed to paladin) and has a heal early on (as opposed to warlock).
I'm fine with the ocassional death, especially if you knowingly go into a tough situation (such as attacking an elite by yourself), I'm not okay with quests tuned for BoAs due to most of the WoW community having them.
Before people label this as a QQ thread, this is not. I don't care that my guy died and I have to spend 20 seconds to run back. People who are new to WoW and/or MMOs in general will care. It's not fun to start a game and start dying over and over while you're still learning how to play (ask anyone who has played Demon Souls and/or Dark Souls for the ps3).
