Be wary of Wowhead on capped/slow plans!

There's another thread here asking about issues on Wowhead:

http://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20752326947

Wowhead is indeed having some major problems right now. Several users are noting that the site uploads potentially several gigabytes of data in a relatively short timeframe, while each individual page load can be numerous megabytes in size. If you are accessing Wowhead from a capped Internet plan, the site can potentially use up all of your data in only a few hours. Likewise, if you are using Wowhead on a slower Internet connection, it can consume a lot of bandwidth in the background and drastically impact your in-game latency.

There is a thread on Wowhead's forum regarding this as well:

http://www.wowhead.com/forums&topic=257920&p=4013956

Additionally, as usual, be careful in general when browsing Wowhead. Wowhead has gained a notorious reputation for serving up malicious advertisements. When accessing Wowhead, I personally recommend using an ad blocking program such as uBlock Origin for your safety.

Bad advertisements are relatively rare and you are highly unlikely to be affected, but if you notice any strange behaviour with your Battle.net account or are concerned in general, run an occasional malware scan with a program such as Windows Defender or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Stay safe, and have fun!

Stickied thread temporarily while WoWHead is investigating this issue. We appreciate our players calling out things like this - we are a community of gamers after all, so thank you for looking out for all players! :)

Just a reminder to please observe the forum rules, watch the language used and all that.

I certainly understand concerns about the in-game Help section containing links to WoWHead. When you click on those, they do state it will open a new browser window - WoWHead itself is not loading up using in-game assets or code. I'd also like to take this time to encourage account security overall - Kodiack has an excellent post on this:

To clarify a few things...

Blizzard does not own nor operate Wowhead. Blizzard is not serving malicious advertisements. ZAM is the company that maintains Wowhead.

To my knowledge, accounts rarely get compromised because of malware. Most accounts are compromised by players clicking links in phishing emails then attempting to log into fake sites.

Battle.net accounts that are linked to Wowhead/ZAM should not ever be at increased risk. Account linking does not share login credentials with third-party sites.

Authenticators continue to be the best way to protect your account. Download the Battle.net authenticator app for your phone or grab a physical authenticator if you're concerned about being compromised.

To further this in a more technical aspect (my area of expertise - I'm one of the Technical Support Forum Agents), I'd highly recommend against leaving multiple pages of WoWHead open at this time while playing WoW. Increased latency could result, DEcreased frames per second (a tad uncommon but still possible), and even disconnections could occur if the router or modem is unable to handle the flow of data streaming back and forth.

*edit: I should post less often after eating Thanksgiving leftovers! Note: you CAN NOT improve your frames per second by opening up multiple pages of any site. No matter what silly Blue posters like me indicate.*

I appreciate everyone who has provided assistance in this thread with suggestions and investigations to help the overall issue with one of everyone's favorite WoW sites. Thanks for making the community better and helping, something we love to see!

What I don't like seeing, and dislike taking time from helping players with technical issues to handle, is mean or nasty posts about other players. Regardless of the circumstances involved, we can all act like a community, be mature, and in the spirit of the holidays, be thankful we have each other to rely on while playing World of Warcraft.

I've moderated posts in this thread that have gone against our forum rules and wish to remind everyone a final time: be nice, watch the language, and let's stay on topic.

Hello all,

Wowhead has made an official statement here, which includes details on how they’ve addressed this situation and what they’re doing to avoid it in the future: http://www.wowhead.com/forums&topic=257964

As the troublesome ads are now disabled, and the conversation here has gone far off-topic, this thread is now locked. Thanks again for bringing this issue to our attention.
