Why lock Derailed threads ?

blizz -> wysłany:
I know there is several different reasons the mods do it but their is also several alternatives to doing so.

For instance when a good thread turns bad due to trolling/asshatery why not just temp/perm ban the instigators and leave the thread open for those who were having a real discussion.
(isn't this why you gave us the ability to rate posts ?)

Honestly thought getting a single thread full of trolls/aholes would be ideal for the blizzard staff because it allows them to find the bad apples and stamp them out fairly quickly.

Besides trolls/aholes do not care when a thread gets closed they simply just look for the next thread to make a MASKED INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE REMOVED out of themselves and others, so blizzard is essentially just punishing those who were being responsible and contributing to a thread.
blizz -> wysłany:
Good morning,

For threads that aren't locked for redundancy or borderline Code of Conduct violations.

One way to stop a derailed thread is to stop the derailed discussion itself from continuing. Locking preserves what useful information/discussions may have occurred. The alternative would be to remove the entire thread.

Note that the original post still has to adhere to the Code of Conduct. Most common issues are posts that are mostly constructive but peppered with use of masked inappropriate language and/or solicitation or goading for non-constructive/trolling replies.

As it will be shown in replies by others below, this is why discussions of forum moderation is not encouraged under Forum Guidelines. ( http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/900930866#2 )

yeah couldnt they black out all the bad and leave the good discussions readable? but then that would require sorting through every post

At some point having pages with only 2-3 or zero posts makes threads look ridiculous (I've tried that before, it hurts more than helps). Plus there's always the issue of going after the instigator, rather than suspending/deleting every single person that responds to the element that derailed the discussion.

And thanks for the caffeine!
