Why does Blizzcon exist? To add on to that, why do we have to pay to watch a live stream of Blizzcon. There is a convention out their that happens every year in june that EVERY major game developer and console developer shows up to. And every year this convention is streamed for free on sites such as ign and gamespot. I am speaking of course about E3.
I always look forwards to E3. It lets me know what I have to look forwards to in the future of gaming. Nearly all big gaming industries show up to this convention except for one. This company is Blizzard. They have probably only done a presentation at 1 show in the last 8 years and it was about starcraft ghost, a game that was never released.
I guess my question is, why does Blizzard feel they need to hold their own show and charge people hundreds of dollars to watch it. Blizzard is definitely not bigger than the big three console developers, yet the console developers do their show for free. It seems like another cash grab to me. =(
E3 is an expo primarily geared toward employees and press in the gaming industry. BlizzCon is a convention we host ourselves for our Blizzard gaming communities. In order to make sure it's packed full of cool stuff, we need to make sure it roughly pays for itself.
The size, scope, and purpose of BlizzCon is so different from E3 that there's no meaningful way to compare the two. |
