Curious about a contradictory GM...

Hey,
Kind of new to these forums so noy sure where to post (and probably get an inevitable delete *sigh*) but I ticketed a report to a GM about what was pretty much a clear cut case of ninja-looting in a raid, but the GM is allowing the player to get off scott free. Annoying, yes, but the amusing thing was the totally contradictory nature of the GM reply, and when questioned about it, he pretty much turtled up and ended the conversation.

Guild member made a PUG (he was a trialee), went ML at the start and didn't tell anybody (from my understanding, it was with someone he knew as the first invitee so he wouldn't tell on anyone). Anyways, people joined for a BOT trash run, and then, lo and behold, the epic healer staff dropped. Said player took the item (with no discussion to anyone, he was on a DK at the time) and of course the cries of "Ninja!" went through the system. After a mini-investigation (with lots of lies from said perpetrator, seems pathologically incapable of telling the truth tbh...), he was kicked from our guild due to being on his 3rd warning for harrassment of other players, and GM's ticketed to ask for the removal of the item. Not a ban, not a "omfg stop him!" just a polite request to remove the item from him. Even more so, as he was promptly found trying to sell the item within trade just a couple of hours later.

Anyways, got a reply from the GM. Because no loot rules were discussed at the start (he didn't give any players the opportunity to) they will not do a thing, and allow the player to keep the item. Which in itself is ridiculous as it is pretty much a clear case of screwing over other players to benefit himself, but thats not the ridiculous part.
The ridiculous part is the GM said that its pretty up to the community to ostracise him as social taboos will mean that he will feel pressured and upset by having no friends or difficulties to find a new guild. SOunds reasonable, huh?

However, I pointed out to the GM that according to Blizzards TOS, we are NOT ALLOWED to name and shame players, else we get hit with the report hammer. So basically, the GM was talking cack. How can we use these amazing "social taboos" to penalise this jackass when if we do name him, we get reported and banned ourselves? Also, the whole principle of being ostracised on the server means nothing, when you can use LFG for 5mans and PvP, and if things get bad, just Server Xfer and do it all over again. But the fact that the GM pretty much contradicted his own companies TOS. When I even asked the GM does this mean I can make raids, go ML, take what I like, be the biggest jerk around, but as long as I don't insult people, the community is pretty much powerless to stop me, as under Blizzards own TOS, they are not allowed to insult or name/shame me? To whit, he just pretty much went silent, and tried to end the conversation (which is fair, but bear in mind, I tried to end the conversation myself about 5 times, and he kept reopening the window etc, it smacks me as amusing...)

All in all, this is just another example to me of how powerless, and frankly weak the GM system actually is. Lots of statements, and policies, but no real power to actually do jack.

Anyways apologies for the wall of text, just curious as to whether people think the GM ocntradicted himself totally regarding this.

TL-DR version? Read it.

Oh, and if you feel the need to troll or flame, makes no difference to me.

The ‘norm’ as far as we are concerned is this: the master looter can do whatever they like with the loot. The end. The rest is conjured up by the community and has nothing to do with us. This is not ‘passing the buck’ or ‘evasion’ it is quite simply the entire purpose of the loot mechanic. If you do not like or agree with that purpose then do not use it. If you feel there is a niche for a new looting method, then you should make a constructive proposal in our Raids and Dungeons forum here:

http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/874704/

Gaining loot rules is so strongly recommended because it is simply the easiest way to prove that a scam took place. Sure, maybe he whispered his intentions to a friend in-game before the raid started, which is great for us, but rare. So, the simplest way of getting the information we need in order to take action on such behaviour is a violation of pre-determined looting rules. Again, this is not ‘passing the buck’, it is placing the responsibility upon the player-base, which is surely the right thing to do? It is not our responsibility to get involved in looting rules or disputes that you have created.

We do our best to educate everyone about our policy (support articles, forum posts, tweets, Facebook announcements, Spotlight threads etc) but once again we cannot force this down people’s throats. If they wish to protect themselves from such incidents then it is their responsibility to make an effort to find out how to do so. And it doesn’t take much effort at that.

As for your conversation with the Game Master, well I have to say that it all looks pretty exemplary to me, considering the situation. And I can’t see any recommendation to ‘ostracise’ the offender. In fact, he confirmed that defamatory comments made in public were something we are interested in investigating further. However, if you would like to leave your feedback on your support experience then you are free to email [email protected].
