I don't know whose idea it was to put a limit on the amount of replies each thread gets, but this is now why I will not participate on the forums.
I read a thread and a few replies. I disagree or agree with something I've read and decide to contribute my opinion. I type what I have to say, click on send and now get the message forum posts have reached it's limit.
So it's not my decision not to contribute, Blizzard decided for me.

This explains why there is a limit of 500 replies (501 if you add the OP) per thread. The thread also explains how to continue a thread that caps out.
