It's unfortunate to hear that you are leaving, Frostyman. While I understand the frustration as an avid miner myself (heck, I do it for relaxation on my lunch break), I definitely understand the irritation one can feel when a mining node disappears from under me mid-mine, or when I fly around a zone and have only found one, maybe two, nodes in a 15 minute period without seeing any other miners.
There's a few things I do in these situations. Understand that I'm not permitted to use my tools or my previous Game Master training on my play realm, so everything I do in these situations are as a player and not a Blizzard employee. I do a lot of tab-targeting for opposing faction miners, check my combat log for people casting "Mining," and as my miner happens to be a hunter, leave up Track Humanoid. If I manage to get a name and have a suspicion they're mining illicitly, I submit a petition. What happens with these petitions is the information from them is gathered and then gets forwarded to our Hacks team. Our Hacks team, ultimately, are the individuals who take care of botting and underground mining detection. Players who commit either of these actions can and often will get suspended or have their account permanently closed. But there is a caveat to that, as many of the players found to be doing so are not in control of their account - they've usually been compromised. That's part of the reason that simply removing the individual does not do as much as you might think. Yes, we can lock down the account so that the player it belongs to can get it back. But it's better for us to gather the information on how they are doing what they do so that we can develop systems that scan for and catch these sorts of things. We do not want to be entirely reliant on player reports in these situations when we have the capacity to address it in another manner. We need to prevent it from being possible, because the account is not what matters to the person who compromised the account - if it closes down, they'll just go steal another person's information. |
