He will die in the shadowmoon questchain, only to be ressurected later by a malevolent force(Old Gods).
But instead of being incased in ice and turned into the Lich King, this time he will become just a lich, ressurecting all the fallen warriors of the Iron Horde to fight again, making the Iron Horde twice as hard to defeat.

So I have been thinking about Old Gods lately. If I were to rank the overarching villains of Warcraft lore, I would put the Old God directly under the Void as the number two threat to all existence.

I came across this quote from Blizz on wowwiki several months ago and it got me thinking,

Blizzard representatives have stated that they feel the connection between Yogg-Saron and the Lich King ended up being poorly expressed in-game, but added that it "had a lot to do with the ability for mortals to become corrupted."


I have recently developed a theory about the nebulous connection between the Lich King and the Old God of Death.

1. Has anyone notice that the Helm of Damnation appeared to change the materials it was made out of? The helm from in final cutscene of WC3 appears to be made out a light, bone-like, material, almost as if it was the literal skull of Nar'zhul. Yet, in WTLK the material of the helm, and his armor as well, appears to be a thick, dull, almost-black metal.

2. Every weapon, armor, vehicle, and building built AFTER the Lich King's re-awakening is forged from saronite. With the Lich Kings return and the extensive use of saronite, the scourge grows much more powerful.

3. Yogg-Saron's increases tremendously AFTER the scourge begins making everything out of saronite. My claim is based on the fact that he is only powerful enough to escape the Titan's bonds AFTER the scourge begins their invasion. If is power was always so great, he would have tried earlier. And it begin just a coinscendence seems extremely unlikely.

4. After Yogg-Saron's defeat, the scourge begins to lose power. The Lick King and the scourge are nigh-unstoppable UNTIL Yogg-Saron dies, after his death, the scourge suffered rapid defeats leading to Icecrown itself. Again, this begining solely by chance seems unlikely.


My conclusion is that Yogg-Saron was using the scourge to channel power into himself, thus making his escape a reality. Yogg-Saron is the God of Death, it would follow that he would have some dominion over the dead. Somehow, Yogg-Saron manipulated the Lich King to awaken, order the harvesting and production of saronite, and declare war on the world of the living. As his literal blood, it is easy to imagine that Yogg-Saron would be empowered by the death and destruction saronite armed scourge forces were unleashing. It is also likely that he could bolster those undead forces to victory through his connection to the saronite, thus making Yogg-Saron the engine behind the scourge. Once strong enough, Yogg-Saron abadoned his petty tools and attempted his escape, only to be defeated. Without a power source, the scourge begins to collapse in on itself. Soon enough, they too are defeated.

With this theory, the significances of Yogg-Saron and the Old Gods is put in this proper place. Just as Illidan was a likely pawn in the schemes of the Old Gods, so too was the Lich King.

Of course, some may say, "Well, the Lich King's helm wasnt made out of saronite, it was forged by the Burning Legion." True.

There are two likely solutions to this problem
1. The Burning Legion used saronite to forge the Helm of Damnation. This could be unwittingly or intentional. The Old Gods are the oldest enemy of the Titans and could easily be the true force behind the Burning Legion.

2. The Burning Legion didn't forge the Helm at all. Remember it was the draenei who corrupted Sargeras. Now Sargeras corrupted them. Blizz can retcon.
